For many people, sitting in a library, where there is only the noise of the occasional screech made by moving a chair, is a welcome change from the bombardment of the noises usually heard. In our modern world, filled with so many sounds caused by machines, electronics, construction, and other man-made devices, it is hard to find a situation where there is no noise.

The negative effects of noise pollution on human health has been documented: “Exposure to prolonged or excessive noise has been shown to cause a range of health problems ranging from stress, poor concentration, productivity loss in the workplace, communication difficulties, fatigue from lack of sleep, to more serious issues such as cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, tinnitus and hearing loss.”

Sometimes, however, the bombardment of external noise is no competition for the colossal amount of internal thoughts. Outside or inside oneself, noise can be difficult to escape. But once a moment of silence prevails, it can be as refreshing as floating in a lake’s still waters on a warm sunny day. What can we do to bring silence into our inner lives?

Sadhguru explains that in the process of becoming silent, shutting one’s mouth is only half the job. Those too enamored of their own thought processes will only catch themselves in a loop of recycled memories.
