Many of us have heard spiritual discourses asking us to stay in the present moment and suggesting that all fears and insecurities arise from our tendencies to wander mentally into the past or future. We have also heard of the need to give up all our attachments mentally to stay free of suffering. While it would be really great to not experience any stress from fears or insecurities or attachments, is this really possible in the world we live in?  We hear of various natural disasters, acts of violence and other dangers to our survival constantly in the social media and news channels. In day to day life, a person living a simple family life or pursuing career success also experiences various moment to moment anxieties just in meeting his own expectations and in satisfying expectations of people around him. Is a state of no anxiety a utopian state, or is it really possible?

We have heard stories of enlightened beings living in various times who transcended all their desires and reached a state of bliss. What does it take to reach this state within? Does it require a strong belief that anything is possible? Can we simply refuset to accept what the mind throws at us in terms of noise or chatter? Is there a certain amount of fear or anxiety which serves a healthy purpose? For example, many times before a big exam or a big purchase we experience some anxiety, which may motivate us to roll up our sleeves and work harder or do more due diligence to ensure we are getting the right product which meets our needs. Many of us have accepted a certain amount of anxiety, fear and insecurity as healthy to propel us to make the right decisions. Are fear and insecurity a problem only when they spiral out of control, or are they completely unnecessary in the first place?
