His mom tried repeatedly to get him to clean his room. Shirts clean and dirty lined the floor and bed. Trash did not often make its way into the trash can. A few old magazines some pages ripped for future research, lined his bookshelf, ready to fall if a sock landed nearby. She reminded him daily that his weekly chore allowance would not be forthcoming if this one task was not completed. Still, he preferred to occupy his time playing video games and corresponding via social media, oblivious to the chaos around him. Hands in the air, his mom would often leave his room at a total loss.

Why is it difficult to do something we dislike? Why is it difficult to focus, even with some type of motivation dangled in front of us? Have you ever started a task, gotten interrupted by your own thoughts or desires, and never finished what you started out to accomplish? After all, it may be only one thing, but why is it so difficult to do it?
