Have you ever had days where you can’t even remember what you had for breakfast? Maybe you were driving and missed your exit while deeply immersed in thought? Or maybe you read a paragraph and then had to reread it because your mind was somewhere else even though you read the words.
Our awareness level seems to vacillate each day. Sometimes tiredness is a factor and we try to kick our energy into gear by drinking coffee or other caffeinated drinks. Other times, lack of motivation or depression might shrink our level of awareness and we try to activate it with drugs or alcohol. Either way not only are these potentials harmful in the long run, the hoped for change never lasts. What then is a better way to become fully aware and joyful?

Whatever stimulus you may take from outside, he says, essentially all human experience comes only from within. The question is simply, are you on push-start or self-start?
