How would you like to consume much less food, still be energetic, and maintain your weight levels? In this video, Sadhguru shares three foods that prevent your sugar values from sudden spikes and help you not feel hungry for long periods of time while also providing iron and lots of fiber. Before the specifics he starts by sharing how a vegetarian diet forms the base for these foods and increased consciousness.
Sadhguru: “If you simply observe your own digestive system, there are parameters clearly telling you that the human body is built for a vegetarian diet. We started eating a non vegetarian diet for survival. When survival is an issue, you eat whatever is available. But now, the question is just this, what kind of life do you want to live? If you want to live at the optimum level where your body and your brain function best, there is a certain way to eat.”
“If you eat a vegetarian diet, you have to eat consciously. You must make sure there’s substantial variety. If you’re conscious you will see your body will function at a different level altogether” Sadhguru then recommends millets, greens, and fruits as the powerhouse tools to include as you build your vegetarian diet and he explains “the why” behind each.”
Millets (ragi)
“Millets have a certain power to support the human body. They have the highest level of protein content among all cereals plus calcium, iron, and many micronutrients which you will not find in regular commercial wheat and rice that populations are consuming.”
“Just about anything that you can do with rice, you can also do with ragi, but we have fallen into a one cereal trap. Shifting at least 50 percent to a millet diet you will see three things. Your general health and level of energy will be way higher. You can consume much less food and still be energetic. And, you can maintain your weight. Millets are slow release, your sugar values will not go up suddenly. Even with less food, you will not feel hungry for long periods of time.”
Greens
“One great advantage with greens is their iron content. And, lots of fiber which makes the passage of food easy in the system. The fiber works like a brush. It takes away the mucus in your digestive tract. It ensures that unnecessary impurities don’t remain in the body. Greens need at least eighteen to twenty hours before they can work so eat them early in the day so that the next day they work as a good laxative and clear up everything.”
Fruit
“The most easily digestible food is fruit. Digestion means jataragni, the digestive fires. If these fires have to burn most effectively fruit is definitely the best thing. One can become very, very alive and active, no matter what your lifestyle.”
“Because there is only so much volume you can eat and because fruit gets digested so rapidly, you may feel an empty stomach. When you come to a certain level of awareness you will be able to be with an empty stomach and still be energetic. You realize hunger is different, it’s about running out of energy.”
“Most people, when they feel little empty in the stomach. they feel like eating. To get out of this, you need a little bit of awareness, that you can have an empty stomach but still you are okay because you are energetic. Only when your energy starts dipping, you eat.”
“If you go on a total fruit diet, you may have to either spend a little more time and eat slowly so that you ingest enough fruit because with a little fruit you will feel full because it’s generally sweet. There is also a bio clock within us that, by the time you reach ten, twelve minutes your body says you’ve eaten enough. So, you have to consciously eat more to consume enough. If you are physically very active (and eating a fruit diet), it’s important that you bring three meals into your day.”
“You must get used to hanging on with high energy but an empty stomach. This is the time your brain works best. This is the time as a human being you function best.”
