Regardless of any one person’s opinion on the matter, many national borders are still guarded by armed men and women. The stakes are high and vulnerability could mean the difference between life and death. Is there a parallel between the yogi and the soldier, two types of individuals who are seemingly worlds apart?

In this video, at a Hatha Yoga session, Sadhguru speaks to officers of the Indian Border Security Force about the parallels between the life of a yogi and that of a soldier.

One aspect of a soldier’s life is spending ample time alone. Between short periods of action lie much longer spells of silence and waiting. However, both yogis and soldiers are alone by choice. And like a yogi, a soldier has also to learn how to integrate their body, mind and energy in such a way that being alone is not a struggle.

But what of those of us who are not yogis or soldiers? Do we still need to learn to embrace alone-ness? What can we learn from yogis and soldiers that can further our spiritual progress? And what of those of us who prefer to spend a majority of our time with something or someone? Do we make ourselves unnecessarily vulnerable or dependent in our quest for incessant company?

As Sadhguru likes to point out, “if you are miserable when you are alone, you are obviously in bad company.” This short video holds great promise for those who have pondered alone-ness and its inextricable link to spirituality.
