Charles Darwin is well known for his contributions to the theory of evolution. Darwin assumed that, since humans were animals, behavior patterns observed in the higher mammals must also be present in human behavior, especially instinctual behaviors. He believed that instincts were behavior patterns that were inherited and that they generally increased a person’s or animal’s success in adapting to its environment.
Instincts originated in animals lower down on the evolutionary ladder, in response to common environmental challenges. These instincts were inherited by succeeding species, including human beings. Since we have more complex brains than most animals, are we bound to our instincts? Can we break free of our instinctual inheritance? Are our animal natures a hindrance or an advantage at this point in human evolution?
