For many of us, the word “spiritual” immediately brings a vision of a person meditating in silence or a person who has renounced his worldly possessions. In the modern era, there are countless teachers who share different techniques and methods of going deeper within oneself. Some rely on simple practices to stay in the present moment,  while others rely on detailed yogic practices and various visualization techniques including the use of sounds or colors. Is the end goal of all these practices to reach a state of peace within oneself, or to find liberation, or to reach one’s highest potential in life?

Spirituality is uncharted territory for many of us, and we can probably learn by looking back at the lives of people who are considered spiritually realized beings. One thing in common among many enlightened beings is a degree of freedom from physical and mental desires and tendencies. Some of them seem to have arrived in a state of enlightenment right from birth while others seem to have to go through many hardships on the journey. How does one give up desires or achieve a semblance of self-control? Is it by surrendering to God, or by doing one’s duty selflessly, or by engaging in many forms of meditation? Is the precise technique or method important, or do we just need boundless passion within ourselves to cross our limitations? Are all people equal when it comes to the ability to go deeper within themselves, or do some people have a bigger advantage in some way right from birth? Regardless of the answer to these questions, it does seem like every human being has a deeper essence which is hard to explain with any word in the English language.

Listen to Sadhguru explain eloquently what being spiritual really means and how one should live in this state. He dispels many myths people have about spirituality and inspires us to introspect more within ourselves to find the answers.
