Valentine’s Day comes every February 14th and is celebrated across the United States and in many other countries around the world. Gifts, poems, and cards are given to people we cherish in your life. Candy, flowers, and jewelry are the most common gifts.
But what sparked this national holiday? The origin of Valentine’s Day is filled with mystery and not all historians agree. According to one source, britannica.com: The holiday has origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February. The festival, which celebrated the coming of spring, included fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery. At the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine’s Day. It came to be celebrated as a day of romance from about the 14th century. Is this just another holiday that triggers automatic emotions or can we use it to foster a healthy and fulfilling relationship?
