Growing up, many of us learned that it’s important for mature adults to take life seriously. Maybe you heard something like this: “You’re not a kid anymore. It’s time to get serious about life.” Probably these warnings were well intended, and perhaps these ideas do have merit in some ways. But it’s also possible you’ve taken seriousness too far, and now maybe it’s started to feel like a burden rather than a blessing.
Let’s check: Could you envision silly or whimsical behavior leading to spiritual growth? If a Sufi master insisted you could get a powerful teaching simply by putting on raggedy, threadbare clothing and going into town to be ridiculed for it, would you go? If you answered no to both of these questions, perhaps you’ve become dead serious about life.
Below, Sadhguru shares an anecdote about a Sufi master, discusses a few ways to reframe your thinking about seriousness, and points out the value of not getting too caught up in self-importance.
