Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that affects women’s hormone levels. Women will be diagnosed as having PCOS when tests show that they have a higher-than-normal number of male hormones. This hormone imbalance often causes a woman to skip menstrual periods, thus making it more difficult for them to become pregnant.

In addition, PCOS causes other unwanted affects, such as hair growth on the face and body, and baldness. It is also known to contribute to long-term health problems, such as diabetes and heart disease. To ameliorate these side effects, many doctors will prescribe birth control pills and diabetes treatment drugs in order to improve a patient’s hormone imbalance, consequently reducing symptoms. This line of treatment does not cure the underlying condition and often frustrates women who wish to conceive. How can one understand PCOS better, and is there a better way to deal with this condition?
