Sitting on a park bench, he spotted a group of young boys playing ball and two mothers talking as their toddlers laughed as they played. This picture reminded him of when he was 3 or 4 years old. He recalled the many experiences of play and laughter. It was a time when he did not have to chase after happiness; it just seemed to occur, often, as he explored the world. What happened? He thought about that as he examined his present life, full of stress, worry, and only an occasional smile. Now happiness was planned for, penciled in on the calendar – a date with a friend, a sports event, or a trip.

Why is happiness so fleeting? A smile one minute, and a frown the next. We all want to be happy. It isn’t something we drop or forget, but we can’t seem to maintain it. Unpleasant events, like the strongest magnet, pull us away. So what is the answer?
