Black History Month is an annual celebration of the achievements of African Americans. It is a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Black History Month, which also carries the name African-American History Month, grew out of Negro History Week, a creation of the noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans.
Since 1976, every president of the United States has officially recognized the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, have also started celebrating Black history.
