Getting old is something that most of us will experience; however, there are many who see ageing and old age as negative life experiences. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, although Americans have on average added 30-plus years to their life span, the prevalence of negative perceptions about old age has a deep negative impact on the physical and emotional health on that segment of the population. On the other hand, according to a study at Yale University, older people who accept and embrace positive stereotypes about old age are more likely to enjoy better health. It appears that how we feel about old age has a profound effect on our experience of it.

Writing about old age on the Good Therapy website, psychotherapist and author Lillian Ronzin states that accepting aging as a necessary part of being human is the first step toward cultivating a positive attitude toward it. Although old age has many advantages, all too often they get overshadowed by our urge of defy the aging process and our fear of old age. According to Ronzin, these advantages include not succumbing to societal pressure, feeling free to speak your mind, and enjoying your time without the need to keep up with everyone else. To truly embrace old age, Ronzin suggests doing what you really love, and if old age prevents you from doing that then finding another engaging activity that you truly enjoy.

So, how can you cultivate the right attitude and embrace old age? Below, we share Sadhguru’s guidance on doing so:

“Old age need not be misery. In many ways, old age can be a great blessing because the whole experience of life is behind you. When you were a child everything was beautiful, but you were eager to grow up because you want to experience life. When you became youthful, your intelligence got hijacked by your hormones. Whatever you did, knowingly or unknowingly, it just pushed you in that direction. Very few people are capable of raising their intelligence beyond the hormonal hijack and looking at life with clarity. All others are trapped in it.

When you come to old age, all the longings are over, a whole experience of life is behind you and you are once again childlike, but you have the wisdom of experience of life. It can be a very fruitful and wonderful part of your life, but unfortunately most human beings suffer their old age simply because they don’t take care of their rejuvenation process properly. In ancient times in India, old age meant Vanaprastha ashrama [spiritual hermitage], where the old couple went back into the forest and lived there joyfully. But today, old age means “hospital ashrama.”

If you take care of your rejuvenation process well, old age can be a miraculous part of your life, because it is invaluable to have a whole life’s experience behind you and to be once again childlike.

Everything is over, but very few old people can even smile, unfortunately. This is because the only thing that they knew in their life was the physical body. Once the body begins to recede, they become despondent. It might not have become diseased, no big cancer need to have come, but in every step that you take, age is telling you this not forever. If you establish yourself in other [spiritual] dimensions of experience, the body becomes an easy thing to handle. Old age and even death can be a joyful experience.”

I am old now and so is my sister. As I go through my day, I sometimes think how my eventual death is inevitable and undesirable. But that is a reaction, not an insight. If I put attention on the subject, I then come around to the feeling that it is an adventure, the chance to experience the spiritual things that are occluded to my perception most of the time. It is wonderful to absorb Sadhguru's teaching on the subject and even more wonderful to be in his presence because he lives --he IS-- what he teaches. I am going to share this blog piece with my sister, who may be able to absorb some of its wisdom. She won't even let me take a picture of her because she abhors her wrinkles and does not like being reminded that she has gotten old. So sad. We make our own ashrama and carry it around, to be sure. Thank you.

I am 72 years old, and since I retired I had no purpose or meaning in my life. After Sadhguru came to my life, (taking Inner Engineering, etc.)I have so much joy, and purpose now, means nothing. My happiness is within, and just a bird song can put me in tears. I am forever grateful to him with my whole heart for giving his life to a world that is in great need right now. He is one of God's miracles.

It is a comfort to know I am not my body. I remember being born. It is my sense I was born aware. I wish to die aware. I would like to know how to make sure I can do that.

Anna, if you live every moment of your life in restful awareness then you will be in restful awareness even while leaving the body. That is my understanding and just felt like sharing.

I am a Isha devotee and am creating Anand Village in Michigan, primarily for Indian seniors. Am keen to help make old age an exuberant experience. Each of these communities, planned for every major city, will be a consecrated space, will have a rejuvenation center and we will encourage all residents to follow Isha practices. Would like Sadhguru's guidance and blessings to make this as close to a spiritual, vanaprastha ashrama as possible. The first rough draft of our concept in on our website anandvillage.com. Have a lot more to share that is not on the website yet

Pranams to Sadhguru. Spiritual disciplines purify the heart , train the aspirant in concentration and creates the necessary condition for revelation of Knowledge. Hence, practicing this from our childhood days will be a boon in our old age to keep us physically fit and help us rediscover the unalloyed happiness within us. We realize that " I" refers to the Self ( Jeevatma ) and not the "Body". Hence, we can remain Blissful at old age. Though we physically become childlike in our old age, our fruitful spiritual experiences of our life time provides us with the treasure of Wisdom and Renunciation and Blesses us with the Enlightened Knowledge. So, we grow old Gracefully. Even if we have missed to gain Spiritual Wealth when we were young, still we can try to make efforts to understand Purusha, Prakriti and Gunas from this day, to have a Blissful Life ahead. We have to Realize our Self as Turiya, which illumines our Waking State, Dream State and Deep Sleep State. Namaskaram. Neetha Rajendra

Hopefully next month I can enroll in the Inner Engineering 7-session course. Just paying on bills at the moment. Once I'm able to do this,I will enroll. I do the free kriya meditation daily now. I'm still not used to it, but have been doing it daily. And yes, I do believe meditation will help me in many ways. i know I need to lean more, I feel this will be a new beginning for me even being older.

Pranams to Sadguru At every age I have looked forward to doing many things, only now I've become conscious of how imp. staying fit is.I wish my partner also would look at old age with a similar view. There is peace, joy and time for things you did not have time for before but how can you walk the path alone?

Nothing about life and creation is linear and my perception is not either. Although I now realize death to be an extension or continuation of the one life expression, I desperately desire to be liberated before I must exit from this dimension. Sadhguru'simply connects with me like no other Self Realized teacher I have ever come into contact with. I desire to join his bliss body before I make my departure --- no "if God be willing" or "if it be my destiny" --- I have the opportunity because the possibility has come to me through Sadhguru! And I will make it so.

I am 73, and I am glad I learned very precious things I learned from Sadhguru before I die. It is only recently I learned what it means to be "Here and Now" as I realized how my first 70 years of time I was living so mindlessly, awarelessly, and overall plain ignorantly. I learned from Sadhguru many things, so that now I am getting the knack of what it takes to be I am ME. I know at least my eyes are open, I am wiser. What a wonderful revelation it is. Thank you Sadhguru.

I have never felt any time that I am growing older. In the mirror I don't look young with wrinkles but in my mind I was always interested to know more about this creation. From my school days I wanted to know who I am. I feel happy in gazing stars and planets, I feel happy seeing children, I feel happy in my garden of flowers and trees. I love butterflies and birds. I love blue Sky, mountains and rivers. I have always seen Shiva in nature. God meant, for me, this beautiful nature. I am a Science graduate with higher mathematics. I loved my subjects in the college days. I was an artist a Bharatanatyam dancer. I loved to listen to classical music when I get free time. I loved to sit with my computer and browse every day night at least for two hours. I do my house hold work . I prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner for my husband, son and grandson. Above all, I watch videos from my great guru Jaggi Vasudev. He preaches every thing that I want to know. His rational way of approach to spirituality is astonishing. I get completely satisfied with his answers. I am 70 years old. I hardly get time to think of my old age. I have children and grandchildren. My husband is busy reading. I have a good cultural background. I respect my late mother, I respected teachers who showed me the right path. I hardly find time to sit and worship in my God's room but I worship Shiva who is in me always. I am happy My Guru Jaggi Vasudev is there to guide me.

The body is getting old, but it is performing remarkably well. I am most grateful as I wasn't always kind to the body. I on the other hand - I feel like I am about 16 years old. The world is brilliant and filled with wonder, not so much the "first time" wonder that you have as a child, but more like the wonder of rediscovering a long time friend. Seeing the beauty and brilliance in all things even those things that are grossly familiar and we might have believed we knew everything about them - but they are still fresh and new because I am seeing more clearly what is really there. Blessings Sadhguru. I am most grateful for you and all that you share! Barbara
