Often winter is associated with catching a cold or the flu. The common cold and seasonal flu are thought to be caused by viruses. Cold symptoms include sore throat, runny nose, congestion, and cough. The flu has the added symptoms of fever, increased headaches, and muscle soreness.

The flu can last for one to two weeks. When you have the flu, you are considered to be contagious from one day before you have any symptoms up until five to seven days after you start feeling sick. Children may be able to spread the virus for even longer and are considered contagious until all of their symptoms disappear.

Many people attempt to shorten and/or make their flu outbreak more bearable by using over-the-counter flu medications. But is there a better way to handle the flu when it strikes?
