gut

You are not sure what to do when you need to make a big decision. Others might tell you to “trust your gut”. What exactly does that mean, and is that advice really helpful?

A 2011 study published in the journal Psychological Science attempted to determine whether or not gut feelings or intuition can yield tangible positive results. Researchers designed a game that was based on no obvious strategy; its goal was to force participants to rely upon their hunches. Each participant was connected to a heart-rate monitor. In addition, they had sensors attached to their fingers that measured sweat secretions. Most players figured out how to listen to their heart rate. When the rate increased, they made certain choices that helped them improve their scores and eventually win the game. The problem was that most people mistook the subtle bodily changes for intuition or gut feelings. The study was inconclusive.

Sadhguru explains why the concept of “listening to your gut” has arisen and whether it is valid.
