Steven Laureys, a Belgian neurologist, is one of the world’s leading scientists and researchers. He studies consciousness from a neurological perspective. He currently leads the Coma Science Group at the Cyclotron Research Centre of the University of Liege, Belgium.

He talked with Sadhguru for over an hour and a half, talking about the possibilities and the limitations of science, and what it really means to go beyond it.

This is a fascinating conversation that explores the dimensions of science and mysticism, and explores various questions that many of us have pondered at some point. For example, are the “mind” and “brain” similar or different? What is the “second brain” in your stomach? How do certain animals and insects sense things differently compared to humans? How does memory determine who we are physically? What happens to the mind and consciousness when we go under anesthesia? How should scientific research actually be conducted? Are there experiences people can have that haven’t yet been defined by science? And what do these different experiences tell us about what’s happening within us?

It’s natural to ask questions like this as we wonder about the world, this existence, and who we are. Steven (a scientist) and Sadhguru (a mystic) both bring interesting perspectives to this full talk that will change the way you think about these subjects, push the boundaries of science, and will stir up your curiosity to explore this even further.

There are a lot of differing perspectives about the nature of consciousness in the scientific literature, and a lot of things that are still unknown that need to be explored.

The conversation explores these different aspects, and also expands on what questions science can help us answer as well as what questions science might struggle with. Listen to the full conversation to learn more.
