According to a survey from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease and Prevention, nearly 10% of U.S. adults and 3% of children participated in yoga in 2012, up from 5% of adults and 2% of children a decade earlier. Another survey, from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, says more than 24 million U.S. adults practiced yoga in 2013, making it roughly as popular as golf.

However, despite yoga’s booming popularity, most people are only familiar with this ancient science of wellbeing as a simple stretching exercise. But if yoga isn’t just about bending, then what is it about?

In the video clip below, Sadhguru and Philip Goldberg discuss “asana”, the most popular, but also the most misunderstood limb of yoga. Philip Goldberg is a spiritual counselor, public speaker, ordained Interfaith Minister and author or coauthor of numerous books. His latest publication American Veda: From Emerson and the Beatles to Yoga and Meditation, How Indian Spirituality Changed the West, chronicles the deep influence of yoga philosophy in American culture.

Far from just improving physical health, as commonly believed in the west, Goldberg and Sadhguru explore how the science of yoga and asanas can provide a path to a much higher possibility.
