If you’re like most people, you probably desire a career that will make you financially secure and will involve work that you enjoy. While work is a necessity for survival, it’s also how we spend most of our adult lives. Therefore, it’s quite common for people to look for work that not only pays their bills, but also provides them with a deep sense of satisfaction and fulfilment. Even though people seek meaningful careers, most of them are unhappy at work. In fact, according to a 2013 report by Gallup, there are twice as many unsatisfied workers than satisfied ones at any job and almost a quarter of workers actively dislike their work. Many people seek fulfillment in their work, but very few seem to find it.

So, why is job dissatisfaction so prevalent and what can people do to find fulfilment in the workplace? According to a recent article in the Huffington Post, job insecurity, poor management, no room for advancement and not feeling valued by your organization all contribute to job dissatisfaction. Furthermore, people also feel unhappy at work when their personal values don’t align with the company or when they don’t feel challenged by they work they’re assigned. According to positive psychology expert, Shawn Achor, the way to overcome these issues and find satisfaction and fulfillment is to focus on nurturing your inner happiness. While most of us believe that being successful at work will make us happier, this formula is completely backwards, says Achor. Success, according to him, is driven by happiness and not vice-versa. We’re all more productive and creative at work when we’re happier, he adds, and becoming more positive will help us find more reward and fulfillment in our lives.
