How many times have you been told to drink more water? Your mom tells you. Your doctor tells you. You hear about the importance of hydration at the gym, in magazine articles, in health blogs on the internet.
Our bodies need adequate amounts of water to function well and to feel good. According to the United States Geological Service, up to 60% of the human body is water. The cells in our bodies are full of water. The brain and heart are composed of 73% water; the lungs, 83%; the skin, 64%; muscles and kidneys, 79%. Even our bones are composed of 31% water. Among its many crucial functions, water flushes waste from our system and allows our body’s cells to grow, reproduce and survive. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy, make you tired and contribute to even more serious health problems.
We are told that we need a certain amount of daily fluid intake for our bodies to function adequately. The Mayo Clinic, for example, estimates that men need approximately 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids per day and women need approximately 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids per day to keep our bodies and minds working well.
Without water there is no life. But should we focus only on the quantity of water we take in or is the way we drink water also important? In this video, Sadhguru tells us how to correctly utilize this most precious life-giving element to achieve optimal human functioning and exuberant well-being.
