Sadhguru: “The word health comes from the word whole. When your body, your mind, your emotion, your energies are in tune with each other and you feel wholesome within yourself, that is when you feel healthy. A large number of people in the world, including many who considered medically healthy, are unhealthy. They may not need any medication but their system does not know any wholesomeness. There is no sense of peace or joy in them. You think you are unhealthy only when you get depressed beyond a certain point, but you are unhealthy if you are not bubbling with joy. There is no wholesomeness in terms of the internal composition of who you are.
This has happened because you never paid any attention to it. This whole attitude of trying to fix everything from the outside has to go. No doctor or medicine can ever give you health. They can assist you when you have fallen into ill health and help you out of it a little bit, but health has to happen within yourself.
If health has to come from within, we definitely have to do some Inner Engineering. Health is not just a physical aspect. Today modern medicine says that man is psychosomatic. What happens in the mind naturally happens in the body. What happens in the body in turn happens in the mind. So the way we are living here, our attitude, our emotion, the basic mental state, the level of activity we are going through, how streamlined our minds are, all these are very much a part of your health.
If health has to come from within, we definitely have to do some Inner Engineering. We definitely have to create an atmosphere where our body, mind, emotion and energy are in good harmony.
If people invest about twenty-five to thirty minutes a day in the morning towards their inner wellbeing, towards certain simple processes with which they can engineer their body and mind to experience full health and wellbeing, then every human being is capable of living healthy and well.”
1 – Learn to Relax!
“Yoga is the science of activating your inner energies in such a way that your body, mind, and emotions function at their highest peak. When your body and mind function in a completely different state of relaxation and a certain level of blissfulness, you can be released from so many things that most people are suffering from. Right now, you come and sit in your office and you have a nagging headache. Your headache is not a major disease but it takes away your whole capability for that day; just that throbbing takes away everything. With the practice of yoga, your body and mind can be kept at their highest possible peak and you can be relaxed all the time.”
2 – Wave Goodbye to Depression
“In yoga, depression is handled at the level of the body, mind and the energies. If the necessary balance and vibrancy is brought about in the physical, mental and energy bodies, to be blissful is very natural. In a blissful being, depression can never exist.”
3 – Sleep Well at Night
“The fact that you sleep at night makes some difference between your mornings and evenings. Your mornings would be just as bad if you did not rest well at night. So what is making the difference is not sleep, but the level of relaxation. A good morning is a good beginning, but you slowly lose your cool as the day progresses and you get stressed. It must be understood that the stress is not because of your work. Everybody thinks their job is stressful, but no job really is. It is your inability to handle your own systems that makes you stressful.
So what is necessary right now is to keep your system in such a way that it is relaxed by itself, and activity does not take a toll on it. You may be physically exhausted, but you need not be stressed. It is necessary to keep the system this way. You can’t slow down your system at the cost of activity. But you’re so relaxed that you can’t do any activity – that’s no good either. For this, there is a technology; there is a whole system to make this happen. If you start certain simple practices of yoga, I would say that within 3 to 4 months your pulse rate would have dropped by at least 8 to 20 counts. The body would run more efficiently and at a relaxed pace…If you keep your body very relaxed and loose throughout the day, if your work, your exercise, are all forms of relaxation for you, your sleep quota will go down naturally.”
4 – Stop Creating Stress
“Stress is a certain level of unpleasantness that you create in your mind. Why do you create this unpleasantness? Is that your choice? Definitely not. Simply because your mind doesn’t do what you want it to do, it is doing its own things. It’s just like, right now I’m using this microphone, it’s a very useful instrument; it’s amplifying everything that I say. Suppose it started saying its own things; then I better not be here. So an instrument that does not take instructions from you is more of a nuisance than of use.
Right now that is how most people’s minds are, it doesn’t take much instructions, it is doing its own thing. Nobody would consciously create any unpleasantness within himself. Unpleasantness is happening because much of it is unconscious, so unpleasantness is happening. If mind was taking instructions from you 100% I am sure you would have kept yourself utterly blissful every moment of your life, there’s no question about that. So instead of seeing how to take these instruments into our control, this body, this mind, this emotion and the energy behind it, if you take charge of these things there will be no such thing as stress.”
5 – Enjoy Fulfilling Relationships
“If your life becomes an expression of you joy, not in pursuit of happiness, then relationships will be naturally wonderful. Shifting your life from the pursuit of happiness to an expression of joyfulness is what needs to happen if relationships have to really work on all levels.
Right now, your body, mind, emotions, and on a deeper level, your very energies, are made in such a way that you still need relationships. If your body goes in search of a relationship, we call this sexuality. If your mind goes in search of relationships, we call this companionship. If you emotion goes in search of relationships, we call this love. If your energies go in search of relationships, we call this yoga. All these efforts are just to become one with something else, because somehow, being who you are right now is not enough.
The whole system of yoga is about this. The word ‘yoga’ literally means ‘union.’ Whatever is the longing behind any relationship, you will never really know that oneness. But if you experience all this life around you as a part of yourself, now the way you exist here will be very different. Now relationships will only become a way of looking towards the others’ need, not about your own because you have no need of your own anymore.
Once there are no compulsions within you and everything that you do becomes conscious, relationships will become a true blessing, no more a longing, no more a struggle.”
6 – Spark Your Creativity
“If creativity has to happen, we have to develop a certain level of un-distortedness in the mind. If you carry the baggage of life with you all the time, you cannot see anything the way it is. In yoga, we always describe the mind as a mirror. A mirror is useful to you only if it is clean and plain. If it is undulating or has accumulated something, it does not show you things as they are. The nature of a mirror is such that if you stand before it, it carries you in full glory. If you leave, the mirror leaves you 100%. It will not retain even a little residue of who you are. The next person who comes and stands in front of the mirror is also reflected in full glory. If a million people look at themselves in a mirror, they will not leave an iota of their quality in the mirror.
If you can keep your mind in such a way that the exposure to life does not leave any residue on your mind, then you see things just the way they are. Then there is room to innovate and create every aspect of your life. If you are just receptive to life, if you become a reflection of life rather than becoming a mind and a jumble of thoughts, this is what is generally considered as creativity.”
